This is my main post on depression. I’m writing it as a depression therapist. I’m also a human givens therapist. And being a depression therapist and human givens therapist, I will be sharing all I know on the subject of depression. What is depression and what causes it? And how do you recover from depression?

The Depression Optimist

I call myself the Depression Optimist. My depression treatment is medication free and does not require you to spend endless hours talking about your problems and issues. We truly have a depression cure. Could this be the answer to the question: what is the best treatment for depression?

Are you depressed and at the end of your tether? Have you been disappointed and become angry at the so-called depression experts? These experts cannot really tell you why you are depressed in a simple language that makes sense to you. Additionally, you may have discovered that their treatments, of talking therapy and/or medication have not helped you?

If this is you, get ready to be surprise, delighted and challenged. This could make a big difference and change forever your experience of depression

How to treat depression is easily answered in most cases and recovery and control and hope is there waiting for you. This is the depression cure you have been waiting for.  And I hope that you contact me for online or face-to-face assistance. My track record is that I help most of my depressed clients within four sessions and in around one month. Perhaps I can do the same for you!

plan of post
  1. I will explain how depression takes hold, according to human givens. You will understand the critical role of over dreaming as the main source of the exhaustion that all depressed people have to endure. This will make so much sense and you will read this knowing that recovery is possible.
  2. Next, I will summarise the four stages of my depression therapist recovery programme. And then I will expand on that – particularly on the role of arousal reduction and problem-solving to get essential needs met.
  3. Finally we will review the main ideas of the human givens approach and show how they fit into a programme of depression recovery.

Your Depression: What is going on

People sink into a negative, hopeless state when their innate physical or emotional needs are not being met and, instead of dealing with this situation, they begin to worry about it. They, therefore, begin to misuse their imagination.

All depressed people worry

Excessive worrying and rumination increases the amount of dreaming. This then upsets the vital balance between slow-wave, recuperative sleep and dream sleep. Consequently they start to develop an imbalance between energy burning dream sleep and refreshing slow-wave sleep. Soon they start to wake up feeling tired and unmotivated. This makes them worry even more as they feel that “something is wrong with me”.

All strong emotions focus and lock attention and attention stays focused on all the bad things that seem to be happening, whether real or illusory. Every little thing we worry about and do not resolve that day is translated into a bad dream the next night. All of these worries have to be worked through in extended and intense periods of dream activity in REM sleep as the brain attempts to rebalance arousal levels. This upsets the relationship between slow-wave sleep and REM sleep.

The most important realisation for my depression counselling

You will realise that clinical depression is not a mental illness but the normal response to a difficult situation which then spirals out of control.

After all if you cut your finger – well yes, you would need to get the wound bandaged. But you would know that the bleeding was healthy. You would only really worry if you cut yourself and there was no blood. So it is with depression. It is the natural response to a difficult set of circumstances that then unravels and gets worse.

It also means there are almost always better solutions than medication.

Get arousal level down and then problem-solve to get your life working. In a nutshell, that is how to treat depression.

My Four Step treatment of Depression

STEP ONE is to truly understand why you are depressed.

You will find explanations, from that first session. I will do most of the talking at the beginning and you may well find that this takes pressure off you. You will also listen regularly to my tailor-made Hope and Firefighting audios. This will ensure that the understandings are really embedded in and become second nature to you.

I expect that they will make complete sense to you by your own lived experience of depression. You will be relieved that there will be no endless talking and no medication. Instead, you will access profound wisdom – from human givens and my experience of over 15 years. My hope is that you will find the answer to the question – what is the best treatment for depression? And that this will be truly liberating for you.

STEP TWO is Firefighting to reduce arousal and rumination and to improve sleep, motivation and energy.

As your understanding grows, you will then learn how to distract yourself and be busy and occupied. And as you do, you will find your optimism, control and old self beginning to return. You are beginning to sleep better and be more energised in the mornings. And as you experience this, you may perhaps notice the beginnings of a self-feeding virtuous cycle. You are beginning to take control of your life and acting rather than ruminating too much. In other words, your depression treatment is beginning to work.

STEP THREE is to remove trauma memories and clear away some of your emotional baggage.

The chances are high that you will be holding onto difficult memories in your emotional brain.  These could be around abuse, embarrassment, humiliation, fear and much more. It is important that these are cleared away. And we will do this using targeted hypnotherapy.

Hypnotic methods rather than talking is my method to clear away emotional baggage. In many cases, your baggage will be related to your habitual ways to deal with problem situations.

STEP FOUR is to begin to take the action you need to get essential needs better met and so get your life on track.

We will undertake a needs audit to discover how well you are getting your essential needs met right now. And as you understand more of the essential human givens needs, you will begin better problem solving. We will set the right goals and challenge any rigid black and white thinking styles. My depression therapist training will unlock doors for you.

Why are these FOUR steps so effective?

These four steps are obviously closely connected as a depression treatment that works.  The high arousal of a depressed person is a trance-like self-obsessed focus, which destroys the capacity to problem solve and so correct the underlying problem that initiated the depression in the first place. The consequences are excessive ruminations, too much dreaming which leads to exhaustion and a loss of hope.

Being able to problem solve and so take control gives a sense of hope and movement.  This is a highly effective way to reduce arousal – the first step to a depression recovery with no endless talking and no medication.

My depression therapist training begins treatment in the first session.

I will normally suggest that you listen to my specially prepared Hope and Firefighting suite of four audios – regularly and under my direction.

This could be until you are sick of my voice, but by which time you will truly understand what is happening to you and how to treat depression, what is good depression treatment and help and how an effective depression therapist should operate.

I will take the pressure off you by taking responsibility for the depression help you need and get you feeling better. This is the first step of an effective depression cure by an experienced depression therapist.

And then when arousal levels are reduced, my Depression Therapist treatment gets into Practical Goal Setting

Being a fully signed up Human Givens depression therapist, my thinking and instincts – to answer the question of what is the best treatment for depression – will sooner or later turn to evaluate your emotional needs.

How well are you getting them met, how balanced are they in relation to each of the essential needs and where and in what way are significant deficiencies impacting on the other needs? In short, how well is your life working for you right now?

Needs, as formulated by Human Givens, are summarised and explained here.  Feel free to download and complete your own Needs Audit. If you then send me your results I will happily evaluate them for you.

Human Givens explains depression recovery

Depression recovery with human givens can be understood as finding ways to reduce arousal and rumination. By one or more of the following:

  1. Explaining what depression is so that you do not feel that you are to blame
  2. Undertake a Needs Audit so that you can begin to perceive your situation differently and in a more detached way. This reduces arousal by engaging your problem-solving capacity.
  3. Investigate whether there is trauma or threshold trauma and then clearing it using the Rewind trance method.
  4. Reframe at every opportunity – which may be directed at softening strong black and white thinking or suggesting more empowering explanations of the past.
  5. Explicit visualisation, rehearsal and guided imagery – designed to impart an experience of relaxation and to access your strengths and resources
  6. Teach relaxation techniques
  7. Master both practical firefighting and challenging black and white thinking

takeaway from post

How much sense does this make to you?

  • Those who are really depressed will be profoundly lacking in energy and motivation and often have a terrible sense of being trapped in their thoughts and emotions without any hope of escape
  • They will be aware of bad sleeping and probably that they are dreaming a lot, that they are introspecting and ruminating too much and finding that they are blaming themselves for their problems
  • They will be aware of collapsing self-esteem and self-confidence and against their better judgement will be isolating themselves from friends and society and often failing to adequately do the basic tasks.

If the answer is yes for you or family members and friends then you will know something of what an awful experience it is to be depressed.

My message to you is one of Hope

Your depression is easier to understand than you could ever have imagined and depression recovery is there waiting for you.

 I am the Depression Optimist.
